The Biomedicine Pathway

A Bachelor of Biomedicine or Biomedical Science is the most common stepping stone into graduate-entry medicine in Australia. Some programs offer guaranteed MD interview places for top graduates.

How the Biomedicine Pathway Works

1
Year 12

Achieve ATAR 85-95+ depending on university

2
Bachelor degree

3 years of Biomedicine / Biomedical Science

3
Apply for MD

Via guaranteed pathway or GEMSAS + GAMSAT

4
Doctor of Medicine

4 years MD → internship → registration

Unlike direct-entry medicine (which requires a 99.85+ ATAR), the Biomedicine pathway typically needs an ATAR in the high 80s to mid 90s. You complete a 3-year Bachelor degree first, then progress to a 4-year Doctor of Medicine (MD).

The total time is 7 years (3 + 4), compared to 5-6 years for direct-entry. The trade-off: a lower ATAR barrier, a standalone Bachelor degree as a safety net, and for some programs, a guaranteed MD interview if you maintain a high GPA.

Why choose Biomedicine over a general science degree?

Guaranteed pathway programs are the main advantage. At Melbourne and Monash, top Biomedicine graduates receive guaranteed interviews for the MD — no GAMSAT required. A general BSc graduate needs to sit the GAMSAT and compete through GEMSAS with the entire national applicant pool.

The curriculum is also more targeted: Biomedicine covers anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and pathology — exactly the foundation you need for medical school.

Biomedicine Programs with MD Pathways

University Degree ATAR Band Duration MD Pathway
University of Melbourne Parkville Bachelor of Biomedicine 95+ 3 years Guaranteed MD interview for top graduates (Chancellor's Scholars pathway). Must maintain high GPA.
Monash University Clayton Bachelor of Biomedical Science 85-90 3 years Top graduates from the Biomedical Science (Scholar) stream receive guaranteed interview for the Monash MD. GPA and interview required.
Australian National University Acton (Canberra) Bachelor of Health Science 85-90 3 years Pre-med stream with reserved places in the ANU Medical School for top graduates. GPA and interview required.
University of Queensland St Lucia Bachelor of Biomedical Science 85-90 3 years Not a guaranteed pathway, but provides strong preparation for the graduate MD via GAMSAT. High-GPA graduates are competitive applicants.
University of Sydney Camperdown Bachelor of Science (Medical Science major) 85-90 3 years Not a guaranteed pathway, but the Medical Science major is designed as preparation for the Sydney MD. High GPA + GAMSAT + interview required.
Deakin University Waurn Ponds (Geelong) Bachelor of Biomedical Science 75-80 3 years Prepares for graduate medicine at Deakin or other universities. No guaranteed MD pathway but good GAMSAT Section III preparation.

ATAR bands are approximate. Check each university's current entry requirements.

Guaranteed MD pathway

  • Melbourne — Chancellor's Scholars: top Biomedicine graduates get guaranteed MD interview
  • Monash — Scholar stream: top Biomedical Science graduates get guaranteed MD interview
  • ANU — Reserved MD places for top Health Science graduates

Still requires maintaining a high GPA (typically WAM 80+) and passing the interview. The guarantee is for an interview, not automatic admission.

Non-guaranteed (GAMSAT pathway)

  • UQ, Sydney, Deakin and others — Biomedicine prepares you well but you apply through GEMSAS like everyone else
  • Need: high GPA + competitive GAMSAT + interview
  • Advantage: Biomedicine gives strong GAMSAT Section III preparation

The GAMSAT pathway is open to graduates from any degree. Biomedicine is helpful but not required.

What If You Don't Continue to Medicine?

A Biomedicine degree is a standalone qualification. If you decide medicine isn't for you (or don't meet the GPA threshold), you still have a strong science degree with career options in:

Research & academia
Pathology laboratories
Pharmaceutical industry
Public health
Biotechnology
Clinical trials
Science communication
Further study (Honours/PhD)

Alternatives to Biomedicine

Biomedicine isn't the only path to graduate medicine. Any Bachelor degree qualifies you for GEMSAS.

Bachelor of Science Choose majors in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, or pharmacology. Works for GAMSAT pathway at any university.
Bachelor of Health Science Broader health focus including public health and health systems. Some programs have pre-med streams.
Bachelor of Medical Science Offered at several universities. Similar content to Biomedicine with more research focus.
Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science Alternative health degree. Strong anatomy/physiology foundation. Less chemistry than Biomedicine.
Any Bachelor degree Graduate medicine accepts graduates from any field. Arts, Engineering, Law graduates all enter medicine. Non-science graduates just need extra GAMSAT Section III preparation.
