What is ATAR?

The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a number between 0.00 and 99.95 that indicates your position relative to all students in your age group, not just those who sat exams. An ATAR of 85.00 means you performed better than 85% of your age group.

Each state and territory has its own exam system (VCE in Victoria, HSC in New South Wales, QCE in Queensland, WACE in Western Australia, SACE in South Australia, TCE in Tasmania, and NTCET in the Northern Territory), but all produce a nationally comparable ATAR.

Universities use ATAR as one factor in selecting students for their courses. Each course sets a minimum ATAR (or selection rank) that may vary from year to year based on demand and available places.
