Provisional Entry Medicine

Secure your place in medical school from Year 12, then complete a bachelor degree before progressing into the Doctor of Medicine.

What Is Provisional Entry Medicine?

Provisional entry medicine is a pathway that allows Year 12 students to apply for and receive a conditional offer into a Doctor of Medicine (MD) program. Unlike direct entry, where you begin medical training immediately, provisional entry requires you to first complete a full undergraduate bachelor degree, typically lasting three to three and a half years.

The key advantage is that your MD place is reserved from the outset. As long as you meet the conditions of your offer (usually maintaining a minimum GPA throughout your undergraduate studies), you progress into the MD program without needing to sit the GAMSAT or reapply through the graduate entry process.

How Does It Differ from Direct Entry?

D Direct Entry

  • Start medical training from Year 1
  • Combined degree over 5-6 years
  • No separate bachelor degree
  • ATAR typically 99.85+

P Provisional Entry

  • Complete a bachelor degree first
  • Total duration 5.5-7 years
  • Earn two qualifications
  • ATAR typically 99+

Entry Requirements

Requirements for provisional entry vary between universities, but generally include:

  • An ATAR of 99 or above (some programs require higher)
  • A strong UCAT ANZ score (required by some but not all provisional entry programs)
  • An interview, typically in MMI format
  • Prerequisite subjects may apply, particularly in chemistry and biology

While the ATAR threshold is generally slightly lower than direct entry medicine, provisional entry remains one of the most competitive pathways in Australian tertiary education. A well-rounded application with strong performance across all selection criteria is essential.

Universities Offering Provisional Entry

The following universities offer provisional (guaranteed) entry pathways from Year 12 into their MD programs:

University Undergrad Degree MD Length Requirements
University of Sydney Bachelor of Science / Bachelor of Arts 3 + 4 years ATAR 99+, interview
University of Melbourne Bachelor of Biomedicine 3 + 4 years ATAR 99+, interview
James Cook University Bachelor of Science 3 + 3 years ATAR + UCAT
Griffith University Bachelor of Medical Science 3.5 + 2 years ATAR + UCAT

GPA Maintenance Requirements

Your MD Place Is Conditional

A provisional entry offer is not unconditional. Most universities require you to maintain a minimum GPA throughout your undergraduate degree, typically a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 65 or above (credit average) to retain your guaranteed MD place. Some programs set the bar higher.

If your GPA falls below the threshold, you may lose your reserved MD place. In that case, you would need to reapply through the standard graduate entry pathway, which involves sitting the GAMSAT and competing against all other graduate applicants.

Take your undergraduate studies seriously from the very first semester. It is much harder to recover from a poor first-year result than to maintain consistent performance throughout.

Why Consider Provisional Entry?

If you narrowly miss out on a direct entry medicine offer, provisional entry is the next strongest pathway into medicine. The major advantage is certainty: you know from Year 12 that a medical school place is waiting for you, provided you meet the GPA conditions.

This removes the stress of preparing for the GAMSAT during your undergraduate degree, competing against thousands of graduate applicants, and facing the uncertainty of the graduate admissions process. It also gives you the opportunity to earn a full bachelor degree, which can be valuable if you later decide to pursue research or a career outside clinical medicine.

Pre-Medicine Pathway Degrees

Even without a formal provisional entry offer, certain undergraduate degrees are designed to feed into graduate medicine programs at the same institution. These are not guaranteed pathways, but they provide strong preparation and are well-regarded by medical school admissions committees.

University of Melbourne

Bachelor of Biomedicine

Designed as the primary feeder into the Melbourne MD. Strong biomedical science foundation with structured pathways into graduate medicine.

Monash University

Bachelor of Biomedical Science

Provides a rigorous scientific grounding. Graduates can apply to Monash MD or other graduate medicine programs through GEMSAS.

Australian National University

Bachelor of Health Science / Bachelor of Science

ANU does not have its own medical school but offers excellent science degrees. Graduates typically apply to ANU Medical School (joint program with other institutions) or interstate.
